New year greetings from Tulku Dakpa Rinpoche

There is no other New year that is similar to the Tibetan Losar as to either date or custom. Tibetans respect this day of auspicious celebration and interdependence having complete confidence in the saying that whatever positive or negative happens on this first day of Losar could be indicative of the whole year. For this reason, having risen early in the morning, washed and put on new clothes, Tibetans then first of all engage in activities in harmony with the Dharma, such as praying to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma and Sangha) and to individual special deities, making offerings to representations of the Three Jewels and meeting lamas or spiritual teachers. After that families gather together in a spirit of joy and drink good tea, eat delicious food and drink strong alcohol. Close family and friends, all with whom one has a mutual connection are invited to sing happy songs, perform joyous dances and play a variety of games. These Losar celebrations will at the very least go on for five days. In particular, on the first day of the New Year one strictly abandons all actions caused by attachment, aversion and dullness and one puts great effort into doing wholesome ones. All make offerings of loving-kindness, peace, benefit of all and at all times wishes of happiness. The abbreviated wish or aspiration Tashi Delek is expressed by all from young children barely able to speak to old persons of one hundred years. Thus, I too, on this excellent day of celebration at the start of the male year of the Earth Mouse would like to wish Tashi Delek from my heart to all those who have a connection with me wherever you may be. The meaning of the expression Tashi Delek is as follows: ta means many or all; shi virtue; de happiness or a happy mind free of suffering; and lek good, excellent or supreme. Joined together it signifies, I wish you supreme happiness and joy of mind through the power of much virtue.

May auspiciousness make the mind turn to the dharma
May auspiciousness make the dharma progress on the path
May auspiciousness make the path clarify confusion
May auspiciousness make delusion arise as wisdom.
